Nicol Matt

Nicol Matt, Conductor & Artistic Director Nicol Matt, one of Germany’s few new generation conductors enjoying international reputation, was born in 1970 in the Black Forest region of Germany. He studied Lutheran church music, conducting, vocal coaching, score playing, piano and singing,at the music academies of Stuttgart, Trossingen and Strasbourg.

He is the founder and Artistic Director of the Chamber Choir of Europe and was the conductor of the Amadeus Choir. Almost one hundred CDs with recordings of highly demanding vocal, orchestral and instrumental works document his sophistication as an artist.

Worldwide sales of over eight million CDs testify to the demand for his highly regarded and awarded interpretations. He regularly receives invitations to perform at established concert series such as the Rheingau Music Festival, the SWR Festival, the MDR Musical Summer in Germany, and in many other countries. As producer Nicol Matt has developed and initiated many new projects for the international TV and music industry, to support choirs and a cappella singing worldwide.

Nicol Matt has active partnerships with contemporary composers from Germany, England and the USA – including Morten Lauridsen, Bob Chilcott, John Rutter, Ola Gjeilo, Hans Schanderl and Frank Zabel. As lecturer and judge, he is regularly invited to international choir competitions, festivals and universities to teach during workshops and master-classes for conductors and singers around the globe.

The Chamber Choir of Europe (CCE)

The choir consists of professional singers from all over the continent. They get together regularly for a concentrated series of rehearsals and concerts, including festivals. Group size varies between 12 and 40.

The ensemble’s repertoire is multi-faceted like the European culture. The singers always feel challenged to create a good chant or, to quote Bobby McFerrin, “a perfect voice orchestra”.

Concerts and musical productions are prepared and performed with passion and precision. Based on this, during recent years the CCE achieved an excellent international reputation as a high performance team based in Germany.

“Great world music, setting standards for choral music. Of course, McFerrin himself is rather a guest in his own sound universe which the Chamber Choir of Europe created so marvelously”, Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote in 2010.

Millions of music lovers appreciate many of the choir’s recordings. For their rendering of S. Bach’s motets, French Diapason magazine honored them with its “Diapason d’or”.

During the German Echo Award in April 2016, they performed a choir arrangement of David Bowie’s famous “Space Oddity” live on TV as an homage to the late artist. Focus magazine saw this as “the most touching moment of the Echo Gala”.

The choir is invited more and more frequently to join festivals and concert series all over Europe, always focusing on the human voice as the “primal instrument” – either a cappella, with soloists, or accompanied by an orchestra.
